He moved to Chicago, Illinois and began writing books on the New Thought movement under various pseudonyms. After working as an attorney for several years, he became interested in spiritualism and other forms of metaphysical thought. He attended college at Johns Hopkins University and received a degree in law from the University of Pennsylvania.
